About our ADU construction work

What Cedar Sun does on a ADU construction project.

California's ADU laws have made it dramatically easier for homeowners to add a second unit, and we've built a steady stream of them since the SB 9 rules took effect. The three formats we handle most are detached new-build ADUs (typically 600 to 1,200 square feet on the back of the lot), attached additions tied into the existing home, and garage conversions where we keep the existing footprint and rebuild the interior to a habitable standard. Every unit is permitted through the local jurisdiction, gets its own electrical sub-panel and plumbing tie-ins, and meets current Title 24 energy code. We also handle pre-approved standard plan submissions in cities that offer them, which can shave weeks off the permit timeline.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about ADU construction.

How long does an ADU permit take in Ventura County?

Most cities in Ventura County process ADU permits in 8 to 12 weeks under SB 9 timelines. Pre-approved standard plans can come back in as little as 30 days. Construction itself usually runs 4 to 7 months once permits are issued.

Can I convert my existing garage into an ADU?

Yes. Garage conversions are one of the fastest paths to a permitted ADU because the foundation and exterior walls already exist. We handle the framing changes, insulation upgrade, electrical sub-panel, plumbing rough-in, and finish work needed to make it habitable.

Do I need to provide off-street parking for an ADU?

California's statewide ADU law removed parking requirements for most ADUs within half a mile of public transit and in many other situations. We confirm the specific rules for your address before we draft plans.

Will an ADU increase my property taxes?

Yes, but only the new construction is reassessed, not the rest of the property. Your existing home's tax basis stays the same. The ADU itself is added at current market value.
