About our deck and patio work

What Cedar Sun does on a deck and patio project.

Coastal Southern California is good deck and patio country. We build elevated wood decks (typically western red cedar or pressure-treated Douglas fir), composite decks (Trex, TimberTech, AZEK), concrete and paver patios, and freestanding or attached pergolas with proper structural connections. Most of our outdoor work lives in the same project: a deck off the back of the house, a concrete patio underneath, and a pergola for shade. Anything elevated more than 30 inches above grade requires a permit and engineered structural connections, which we handle. We also install outdoor kitchens, fire pits, low-voltage landscape lighting, and the rough framing for hot tub and spa installations.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about deck and patio.

Do I need a permit for a deck?

Decks more than 30 inches above grade require a permit in every California jurisdiction. Decks at or near grade level often don't, but we always confirm with the local building department before starting.

How long does a deck take to build?

A standard 200 to 400 square foot deck takes 1 to 2 weeks to build, including footings, framing, decking, and railing. Larger multi-level decks with stairs take 3 to 4 weeks.

What's the lifespan of a composite deck vs wood?

Composite decking (Trex, TimberTech) typically lasts 25 to 30 years with no refinishing. Pressure-treated wood lasts 15 to 20 years with regular sealing every 2 to 3 years. Cedar lasts 20 to 25 years.

Can you build a pergola attached to my house?

Yes. Attached pergolas need proper structural ledger connections to the house and usually a permit. We engineer the connection so it carries the load without compromising the home's exterior wall.
